About Class 2  Biosafety Cabinet

Biosafety cabinets are essential primary containment devices that manage airborne pathogens effectively. They are designed to protect users by employing a continuous inflow of air, which prevents hazardous particulates from escaping the front opening.

Biological Safety Cabinet Uses

Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs), also known as tissue culture hoods, are essential laboratory equipment used to protect personnel, the environment, and products from biohazards by using HEPA filtration and controlled airflow.

Biosafety Cabinet Types

Biosafety cabinets are classified into three main types: Class I, Class II, and Class III, each designed for different levels of containment and protection, with Class II further subdivided into types A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1.

Here’s a breakdown of each type:

Class I:

  • Protection:
Provides protection for the user and the environment from exposure to low to moderate risk biological agents, but not for the sample being manipulated.
  • Mechanism:
Utilizes a HEPA filtration system to filter exhausted air, creating a negative pressure environment.

Class II:

  • Protection:
Offers protection for the user, the environment, and the sample/product from contamination.
  • Subtypes:
    • Type A1 & A2: Designed for general microbiological work with agents assigned to biosafety levels 1, 2, or 3.
    • Type B1 & B2: Designed for work with toxic chemicals and high pathogens, providing superior protection for products, personnel, and the environment.
    • Type C1: A newer type that addresses gaps in safety that exist in Type A and Type B BSCs, offering flexibility for various applications.

Class III:

  • Protection:
Provides the highest level of containment, designed for work with the most hazardous pathogens, offering maximum protection for the operator, the product, and the environment.
  • Mechanism:
Is a fully enclosed, gas-tight cabinet with long, heavy-duty rubber gloves attached to ports in the cabinet.

Biosafety Cabinet Principle

The biosafety cabinet working principle is mainly to suck the air in the biological safety cabinet outward to keep the biosafety cabinet in a negative pressure state, and to protect the staff through vertical airflow.3
